Food Chains, Food Webs and Ecological Pyramids

چکیده
Photosynthesis is only the beginning of a chain of energy conversions. There are many types of animals that will eat the products of the photosynthesis process. Examples are deer eating shrub leaves, rabbits eating carrots, or worms eating grass. When these animals eat these plant products, food energy and organic compounds are transferred from the plants to the animals, known as a food chain. These animals are in turn eaten by other animals, again transferring energy and organic compounds from one animal to another. Examples would be lions eating zebras, foxes eating rabbits, or birds eating worms.

Ecological Networks in Fisheries: Predicting the Future?
76 The theme for the 142nd annual meeting of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) was “Fisheries Networks: Building Ecological, Social, and Professional Relationships,” and that provided me a hook to reflect on how studies of ecological networks have developed and how they can be used to inform fisheries research. Ecological networks, as we know them, date back to the pioneering studies of Raym...
متن کاملPropagation of Cascades in Complex Networks: From Supply Chains to Food Webs
A general theory of top-down cascades in complex networks is described which explains two similar types of perturbation amplifications in the complex networks of business supply chains (the ‘bullwhip effect’) and ecological food webs (’trophic cascades’). The dependence of the strength of the effects on the interaction strength and covariance in the dynamics as well as the graph structure allow...

Food webs describe who eats whom among species within a habitat, and these networks depicting food chains have long been a central paradigm for understanding simple and complex networks in many scientific and social arenas. The structure of the feeding links within diverse food webs typically generates highly complex and dense networks whose details are critical to the behavior of ecosystems. D...
متن کاملDesigner Food Webs: From build-it-and-they-will-come to intentionality-in-design
Anthropogenic landscapes provide opportunities for ecologists to deliberately and intentionally design urban food webs. Ecologists working as full, collaborative partners with designers can construct functional food webs for urban environments that benefit society. As a first step, ecologists can learn to partner with designers by translating ecological knowledge at scales relevant to design st...
متن کاملYoung Scientists Summer Program 2002 Two Research Projects
Goal To explore the evolutionary origin and stability of mutual-predation food webs. There are more roles for an organism to play within a trophic system than those of competitor, predator, and prey. This realization leads to a transition from thinking in terms of food chains to thinking in terms of food webs. (Polis et al., 1995; Persson et al., 1995). Classical concepts from studies of linear...
